Frieda Austel - "Was declared missing shortly before the WW II ended in 1945"
Werner Austel - Our cousin Johannes was a fighter pilot. Oma wrote this in her diary on April 11, 1943. This is what I have always been told. In Aunt Frieda's letter to her cousin, she also indicated that Johannes was a pilot. (In this case Hermann translated the word as a pilot of a dive bomber). I was also by told by Mom and tante Frieda that was he missing in action.
Marianne - Ed and I understood that he was a fighter pilot and thought he was missing much before the end of the war.
Otto - I understood my mother to tell me that he was training to fly gliders so that a troop could cross the English Channel without being detected and that during the maneuvers he became missing.

Notes for Paul Hermann Austel:
Communications with the granddaughter of Paul Austel, Liselotte nee Harnisch, provides us with the information that Paul was the brother of Karl Emil Austel (b. 5/4/1865) and that he died on Jan. 2, 1934 at the age of 58. This would place the year of his birth in 1876. This date is would mean that Paul was born 9 years after the death of the wife of his father's wife Johanna Christine Ebenhoh. The date of her demise was, April 20, 1867, two weeks after the birth of her last child, Emma Pauline (April 7, 1876) at the age of 33. This raises the possibility that his father, Christian Wilhelm Austel, who was born February 15, 1929 and was only 47 at the birth of Paul Austel, could have remarried or entered into a relationship with another partner after the death of his wife, resulting in another son.

2049. NN

Notes for Barthel Augsten:
The date of his birth is "vor 1524" - before 1524, and the date of his death is after 1560. His son Salomon Augsten was born around 1560, so Barthel must have died shortly after the birth of his last son, Salomon.

According to Dr. Hans Adolf Austel (b.1934 and co-contributor of information for this document) it is recognized that sir names in Germany changed frequently prior to the 1600s. There was constant movement of tribes from one area to the other, which contributed to the change of pronunciation of names as well, because of the different dialects in the newly settled areas. It was also the custom to give different sir names to children of the same family. During the 1500s and 1600s, however, sir names finally became more stabilized.

It is proposed that the name Austel had its roots from the holy name Augustinus, which was shortened to Augustin. In the 1200s families from Franken, with the sir names of Augustine, roamed to and settled in the area of Zwönitz.

The name Augustine was mutilated by dialects, spelling errors of ecclesiastical bookkeepers and eventually changed to Augustin, Augstin, and Augsten, then with the time of years to Austel, as we see in the records that we have of our most early documented predecessors.

To illustrate the theory proposed above:
The names Barthel Augsten and his children Johann Augsten, Maria Austel, Martin Augsten, & Anna Augustin are recorded in the same church book in Zwönitz. Data was also derived from information documented in Austelvilla in Zwönitz.

Other interesting ways the name was written in the church records: Eystel, Eistell, Aystel, Augstel, Ästel and Aistel

Children of Barthel Augsten and NN are:
i. Johann Augsten
ii. Maria Austel
iii. Martin Augsten
