Best time of day to kayak on Big Bear Lake
Mornings are usually the calmest and best for beginners. Later in the day, wind can pick up, so checking the forecast before your rental is always a good idea.
Big Bear Kayak Rental FAQs
Do I Need a Reservation?
We recommend reserving ahead, especially on busy summer days. It is the easiest way to lock in your rental time and know exactly where you are going. Reserve online.
How early should I arrive for my rental?
Please arrive about 15 minutes early so you have time to sign waivers and check in before your rental starts. Arrive 15-30 minutes early if visiting our Boulder Bay location on a Saturday or holiday weekend to allow extra time for parking.
Which launch location is easiest for beginners?
Our private dock location by Veteran’s Park is the easiest option. Our staff will help you launch and the kayaks are already on the water. Boulder Bay is a self-launch from shore.
Do I have to transport the kayak on my car?
No. Our rental locations are right next to the water, so there’s no need to load kayaks onto your car.
Do I need to pay in advance or use a credit card to reserve?
No. You can reserve online without a credit card and pay when you arrive.
Are life jackets and paddles included?
Yes. Every kayak rental includes life jackets and paddles. View everything included with your rental.
Are kayaks easy for beginners?
Yes. Our kayaks are stable and beginner-friendly, and our private dock launch is especially easy for first-time renters.
Will I get wet?
Yes, most customers should expect to get a little wet, especially shoes and feet. If you rent at our dock location, you can leave your shoes on the dock.
Should I rent a single, double or pedal kayak?
Single kayaks are great for solo riders who want their own space on the water. Tandem/double kayaks are a popular choice for couples, friends, and shared rides. Pedal kayaks are best for guests who want a more relaxed ride with less paddling effort and are available in both single and double options. Check out all of our kayak rental options.
Is parking included, and are there extra lake fees?
Free parking is offered at both kayak rental locations. There is a $3 lake permit fee per kayak or paddleboard.
What is the weight limit for each kayak?
Our single kayaks hold up to 300 lbs. Double kayaks hold up to 425 lbs total. Single pedal kayaks hold up to 275 lbs, and double pedal kayaks hold up to 475 lbs total, with a 275 lb seat total. View our reservation form for information on capacities of each kayak.
Can a child ride in a tandem kayak?
Yes. Our double kayaks can hold up to 2 adults plus a small child or pet, and you can add a 3rd seat for $5 for a small child. The form also notes that in the paddle + pedal special, that added child seat is for a child under 50 lbs.
How old do kids need to be to paddle alone?
Kids 12 and older may paddle alone on standard kayaks as long as they stay within view of an adult. For pedal kayaks, kids must be 16 or older to pedal alone within view of an adult.
Are your kayak rentals pet friendly?
Yes. Our kayak rentals are pet friendly, and dogs can come at no extra cost. Dog life jackets are also available to rent for $8.
Is Boulder Bay good for large groups?
Boulder Bay is not recommended for groups larger than 25 because of limited shoreline space. Our private dock location is perfect for large groups. Learn more about our kayak rental locations.
Are kayak rentals always available in any condition?
Big Bear Lake’s weather is typically pleasant, but kayak rentals are subject to wind conditions.
